Childhood’s End
When our dad died suddenly, my sister and I were faced with our mother’s downward spiral into extreme confusion, fragility, and finally death from Alzheimer’s disease. Although at the time, we were adults with full-time careers, husbands and small children, this sad and terrifying time definitely signaled the end of our childhoods. These five drawings and paintings of toys are meant to tell a story and convey that to us, through the devastating effect of Alzheimer’s disease on our mother, became our “Childhood’s End”.
1. “This is the story of a mother, her two daughters and Alzheimer’s Disease”
2. “We tried to embrace our mother and the situation”
3. “We got a lot of “unasked for” advice”
4. “We couldn’t put her back together again”
5. “In the end, she became like a Lamb of God”
